Rishabh Pant, the dynamic Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, has surged to a career-best seventh position in the ICC Test rankings for batters. This achievement follows his outstanding performance in the first Test against England, where he scored two impressive centuries. He now shares the distinction with Zimbabwe's Andy Flower as the only wicketkeepers to achieve twin centuries in a single Test match.
Pant's scores of 134 and 118 at Leeds showcased his resilience and skill, even though England won the match by five wickets. His success is particularly remarkable considering the serious car accident he endured in December 2022.
After a 15-month absence from the sport, Pant's return has been nothing short of sensational. Sanjiv Goenka, owner of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), lauded Pant's performance at Headingley.
Goenka took to social media to express his admiration: "From battling the odds after his unfortunate accident to batting his way to 7th in the ICC Test rankings, @RishabhPant17’s comeback story is truly inspirational. By setting new records and becoming the first Indian keeper-batter to hit 800 rating points, he continues to raise the bar." He further extended his best wishes to Pant and #TeamIndia for the remainder of the series.
Prior to his Test exploits, Pant secured a lucrative IPL contract worth Rs 27 crore with LSG at last year's auction. While his form in the IPL initially drew criticism, with just 128 runs in 10 innings, his stellar performance against England has firmly silenced his doubters.
