Following India's five-wicket loss to England in the first Test at Headingley, Shubman Gill's debut as Test captain has come under intense scrutiny. Despite India's strong batting performance, former captains Nasser Hussain and Ravi Shastri have raised concerns about Gill's leadership on the field and his tactical decision-making.
England defeated India by five wickets in the first Test at Headingley.
England successfully chased down a target of 371, with Ben Duckett's outstanding 149 leading the charge. However, it was Gill's captaincy that became a major talking point.
Nasser Hussain drew comparisons between Gill and his predecessors, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, noting a difference in their on-field presence and authority.

"I thought I saw someone just finding his way, honestly," Hussain commented on Sky Sports. "You've got to be very careful in the first Test match, the people he's taken over from, Kohli, and then Rohit Sharma. I thought he didn't quite have that on-field aura as the names I mentioned there."
Hussain also observed that Gill appeared to be sharing responsibilities with several senior players. He described it as "captaincy by committee," a common occurrence when a new leader is still gaining experience.
Key points raised by Hussain:
Hussain also questioned India's bowling tactics, particularly the utilization of Ravindra Jadeja, suggesting that Gill could have been more assertive in guiding his experienced spinner.
"A word with Jadeja, maybe as a young captain, to go to such an experienced spinner, and go, you do know the rough is out there," Hussain stated, highlighting the lack of communication regarding bowling strategies.
As India prepares for the second Test, the focus is now on whether Gill can evolve into the leadership role and address the concerns raised about his tactical acumen.
