Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his thoughts on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England's Test squad, describing it as a "gamble worth taking." However, he also advised caution regarding his immediate entry into the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Jofra Archer eyes Test return after injury setbacksArcher, who last played a Test match in February 2021, is in contention for the second Test, which commences on July 2nd. The 30-year-old has been plagued by persistent elbow and back injuries in recent years. He made his return to red-ball cricket earlier this week for Sussex, bowling 18 overs against Durham and taking 1/32.
Hussain, in his commentary for Sky Sports, acknowledged the challenges of Archer's comeback: "Firstly, it's fantastic news for both Archer and England. Jofra has undoubtedly endured immense hardship due to those elbow and back injuries, the demanding rehabilitation process, the constant pain, and the mental strain of repeated injuries and attempted comebacks. It's truly heartening to see him back in the squad. It's worth remembering that he hasn't played a Test match for four years."
However, the former captain urged a measured approach concerning Archer's inclusion in the XI at Edgbaston. "I believe it carries too much risk this week. It may have gone exceptionally well – I'm not privy to Jofra Archer's physical condition – and they might decide to play him this week. However, the immediate question then becomes: who makes way for him?"
Despite these reservations, Hussain remains optimistic about the long-term benefits of Archer's return. "I firmly believe that it's a gamble worth taking, although I'm not convinced it's wise to take it this week. I would consider it a week later at Lord's."
England currently lead the five-match series 1-0 following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
