A potential future star of Indian cricket has emerged, creating buzz both through his batting prowess and his choice of jersey. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 14-year-old cricketer, made a striking debut for India U19 against England U19 in a one-day match at the County Ground in Hove. He blazed his way to 48 runs off a mere 19 balls.
The jersey number he sported, 18, famously worn by Virat Kohli, ignited social media.
The significance wasn't lost on fans, with many interpreting it as a symbolic passing of the torch.
While drawing parallels to Kohli at this stage might be premature, Suryavanshi's audacious approach and impressive strokeplay have undoubtedly made a strong impression.
Opening the innings, the young talent spearheaded India’s pursuit of 175 runs with a flurry of boundaries and towering sixes.
Teaming up with captain Ayush Mhatre, the pair swiftly accumulated 71 runs in just 7.3 overs.
Suryavanshi's innings featured five sixes and three fours before he was caught just shy of a half-century on debut, scoring 48 runs from 19 deliveries.
India U19 ultimately secured a comfortable six-wicket victory, with wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu sealing the win with an unbeaten 45 and a match-winning six.
Earlier in the match, the Indian bowlers dismissed England for 174, with Kanishk Chouhan leading the charge by taking 3 wickets for 20 runs.
Suryavanshi had expressed his anticipation about playing in English conditions prior to the tour. He seems to be living up to his word. "I will get a good experience of playing in England. We will try to win a trophy from there as well,” he stated. Based on his debut performance, his ambitions extend beyond mere participation; he aims to dominate.
Wearing the No. 18 jersey carries considerable expectations. Vaibhav Suryavanshi appears ready to embrace the challenge. Indian cricket enthusiasts may have discovered their next major sensation.
