The Indian cricket team has commenced preparations for the pivotal second Test against England, holding their first net session at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday. The team is looking to bounce back after a five-wicket defeat in the series opener at Headingley. England currently leads the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series 1-0.

While the entire squad was present, including pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, he did not participate in the on-field activities. Prasidh Krishna was also absent from bowling and drills. The rest of the team engaged in a full training session. Mohammed Siraj dedicated a significant amount of time to batting practice. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was observed in lengthy discussions with pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep.
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were seen batting in the nets. Most bowlers, excluding Bumrah and Prasidh, went through their bowling routines. Despite the scrutiny following the loss in Leeds, the atmosphere within the camp appeared relaxed. The team leadership continues to support the squad, which is currently undergoing a transition phase, with senior players backing the younger members.
The players participated in a team bonding activity at an adventure park in Birmingham on Thursday, providing a break before the resumption of the Test series.
All eyes are focused on the question of Bumrah's participation. Having bowled 44 overs in the first Test, the fast bowler is expected to feature in only three matches in this series to manage his workload. Coach Gambhir emphasized that the match score will not dictate Bumrah’s appearances. The decision regarding his participation will be made on a game-by-game basis.
With only four days between the second Test at Edgbaston (July 2–6) and the third at Lord’s (July 10–14), indications suggest Birmingham could be the designated rest match for Bumrah. Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar have stressed the need for workload management, indicating that Bumrah’s availability will be determined with a long-term view, irrespective of the series situation.
