Elon Musk, a vocal critic of OpenAI's shift towards a profit-driven model, is championing open access to artificial intelligence (AI). He recently announced that his AI venture, xAI, will release the source code for its Grok chatbot this week.
"This week, @xAI will open source Grok," Musk declared on X.
Open-sourcing Grok means making its source code freely available for redistribution and modification. This approach offers businesses greater flexibility in problem-solving, allowing them to explore diverse solutions instead of relying solely on internal teams.
The announcement follows a user's suggestion that OpenAI should adopt a similar open-source model. Musk responded sharply, stating, "OpenAI is a lie."
Musk has long advocated for open-source AI.
In a podcast last November, Musk expressed his strong inclination towards open-source AI. "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing," he stated.
His remarks came shortly after xAI launched Grok, its chatbot, developed in a reported four months. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, subtly mocked this by sharing a post showcasing how he purportedly built Grok using a single prompt on GPT Builder.
"GPTs can save a lot of effort," Altman quipped.
Musk retorted, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
