Harvansh Singh Pangalia, the India U-19 wicketkeeper, lives by a simple yet powerful mantra: "Trying to do better." This philosophy, drawn from a memorable dialogue in the Spider-Man movie, fuels his ambition and shapes his approach to the game.
A self-proclaimed Marvel enthusiast, Harvansh finds inspiration in a scene from the 2004 film Spider-Man 2, where Peter Parker responds to a critique with the simple phrase, "Trying to do better."
"There's something about that scene, that dialogue," Harvansh told TimesofIndia.com. "The answer gives me goosebumps."
The 18-year-old recently demonstrated his potential in a practice match against Young Lions Invitational XI. Coming in with the score at 251/7, he unleashed a stunning assault, smashing a century off just 52 balls, including nine sixes. His explosive innings propelled India to a formidable total of 442/9.
Harvansh hails from Gandhidham, Gujarat. He grew up watching his father and uncle play cricket, both of whom were also wicketkeepers. His father now works as a truck driver in Canada to support the family.
"Whenever I step out to bat, I see the faces of my mother and father," Harvansh shared. "They have sacrificed so much for me."
He is determined to one day bring his father back to India, driven by the desire to reunite his parents.
Harvansh admires Yuvraj Singh's resilience and Kobe Bryant's work ethic. He believes that mentality is crucial for success at the highest level. Harvansh aspires to play Test cricket for India, echoing Virat Kohli's sentiment that Test cricket truly tests a player's character.
"Test ka naam test hai because it tests your character," he said. "I love playing four-day cricket. That's the ultimate cricket."
While his teammates Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre have already experienced the IPL, Harvansh remains focused on his own journey.
"They are my friends... They do inspire all of us, but everyone has a different path," Harvansh acknowledged. "Mera bhi time aayega (My time will come as well)."
India U19 is set to face England U19 in the first Youth ODI at Hove.
