Birmingham: Jasprit Bumrah's focused presence at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground nets signaled his intent. With his characteristic shoulder motion, he immediately took his position, preparing for an intense fast bowling session.
After a gentle warm-up, Bumrah increased his pace. A measuring tape was used to mark his run-up for a full-throttle 20-minute spell. Despite the absence of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant, Bumrah bowled to Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karun Nair.
Bumrah challenged the batsmen with accuracy and varying angles, using both sides of the wicket. His mental freshness, aided by a three-day break, was evident as he bowled alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
The trio, who participated in the Headingley Test, focused on purposeful training during their second day in Birmingham, following a lighter first day. Each bowler spent about thirty minutes bowling before practicing their batting.
Siraj worked on defensive techniques with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. Bumrah explored various bowling styles, from side-arm deliveries to slow bowling, maintaining focus throughout his extended session. He also practiced his batting, showing increasing confidence as the day progressed.
In other nets, Ravindra Jadeja continued batting, while Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep impressed. Kuldeep Yadav dedicated himself to both batting and bowling, aiming to capitalize on any opportunity.
Kuldeep Yadav actively sought feedback from the support staff and teammates. He experimented with different angles and lengths. Birmingham's dry conditions might favor his inclusion in the second Test.
Kuldeep's physical condition and bowling rhythm have been strong, evident since the pre-series sessions in Leeds. He had competitive sessions with Gill before the first Test and continues to challenge Indian batsmen in Birmingham.
His batting has been a focus, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak providing guidance. For the past 18 months, Kuldeep has worked to improve his batting, aiming to make significant contributions with the bat.
Following two days of practice, the team will take a break before regrouping on June 30. The bowlers will rest, while coach Morne Morkel can continue his WWE-inspired training with Arshdeep and Akash Deep. The uncertainty around Bumrah's role will persist for at least 48 hours.
